Welcome to Observatory Extension

Located on the Witwatersrand Ridge, the Observatory ambience is one of Johannesburg’s best kept secrets, and its central location to the Observatory Golf Club gives it great, green lung.
We are a community that welcomes all owners and residents who commit to our collective engagement.
A non-profit company that invests all funds in the enclosure, OERF is this voluntary community of owners and residents in the suburb.
We all work together to keep the suburb a desirable and desired location, and have all invested in it with the vision of seeing our asset appreciate in value. The proximity to schools, the golf course, and shopping malls makes Observatory Extension a great place to live.
Formed over 20 years ago, OERF was led by the late Dr Ivor Kaplan with a view to finding a community voice, liaising with the City of Johannesburg, providing a forum for our common concerns, and addressing the various security needs of the suburb via the enclosure of certain streets and employing a security company full-time to keep guard.
We are a body of residents interested in working together to keep our families happy, and our homes safe. Unfortunately, with the high levels of unemployment, as well as other social ills, crime is a reality that must be faced head-on. Hence, we, as a community, need to work together to address our concerns, and win the battle against crime.
FADT Security is our armed response partner of choice. We offer the service of boom gates, which serve as security observation points at key entrances to the suburb. Additionally, an armed vehicle is on patrol 24 hours a day, seven days a week, ready to respond to emergencies. This vehicle is funded by residents who sign up with ADT as their armed response company. OERF has negotiated excellent rates with ADT for home alarm systems as well.
Annual General Meetings are held once per year, and a committee is elected by subscribers.
OERF has also partnered with Uitkoms Home for Girls, an Observatory-based child and youth care centre based in Observatory.
As a resident of Observatory Extension, we invite you to join and become a member of OERF, and become an active part of the community. Without community support, we cannot succeed in collectively protecting our suburb, our families, and our investments. Improvements to the suburb depend solely on an active and engaged community, neighbourhood spirit, and an income-flow for the purposes of sustaining better security and sustaining the desirability of our suburb, as it is today.
